Once you have planned out your options and completed the RETScreen™ feasibility assessment, you can begin pricing systems and components. Comparatively shop for a wind system as you would any major purchase - obtain and review the product literature from several manufacturers.
Here are some tips on:
Once you know what to look for, see our lists of manufacturers and dealers and installers who sell and install small wind turbines in Canada.
Remember: Experts can Help!
It is important to consult an independent expert or a supplier or manufacturer to ensure that any system you buy and install is as efficient, cost effective and safe as possible. Before approaching an expert, you should have the details of your preliminary assessment, and some ideas about your basic design. Even if you are a do-it-yourselfer, you should discuss your project with an expert before committing to a particular system. Some areas where experts can be of assistance:
- Preliminary assessment: They can review your preliminary assessment and confirm the accuracy of the energy and wind resource estimates, and give you some advice on your preliminary design.
- Detailed assessment: They can visit the site, identify appropriate applications and do a more detailed resource assessment, and an in-depth economic assessment.
- System design: They can help you determine the optimal capacity of the wind energy system, and the size and configuration of the system components. Some can also provide advice on hybrid systems, where wind is used in conjunction with solar photovoltaic panels, diesel generators and other energy technologies.
- Equipment selection and costing: Based on their experience, they can find the best equipment for your system and develop cost estimates and, in some cases, financing arrangements.
- Installation, servicing, routine maintenance: For larger and more complex systems, outside expertise in these areas is strongly recommended.
