CanWEA: SmallWind: Installation/Maintenance: Could You Do It?

Could You Do It Yourself?

This information is not intended to serve as a “how to”, it is merely to describe some very basic rules about installation.  Consult a turbine installation manual for details.

To save money, many people decide to install smaller machines (up to 1 kW) themselves. Before attempting to install your wind turbine, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Can I pour a proper cement foundation?
  • Do I have access to a lift or a way of erecting the tower safely?
  • Do I know the difference between AC and DC wiring?
  • Do I know enough about electricity to safely wire my turbine?
  • Do I know how to safely handle and install batteries?

If you answered NO to any of the above questions, you should probably choose to have your system installed by a system integrator or installer.  In addition, you must consider the safety risks for you, others, and your property:

  • Falling off the tower
  • Falling tools or parts
  • Getting struck by a blade
  • Getting electrocuted
  • Improperly mounted towers can be unstable or could fall
  • etc.
